Sony discontinued the aibo product line for several years after producing the ERS-7, which was the very last model of the robot dog. Unlike the models before it, Sony did actually refer to the ERS-7 as a robot dog, and its movements were based on biological dogs. Compared to its ancestors, it is very round and sleek.
The ERS-7 had many new features upon release:
- They have more expressive visors with many LEDs that can show multiple patterns and colors depending on the dogs mood.
- Sony released a full PC app for these dogs, enabling them to communicate over Wi-Fi without any additional work. MIND 2 further expanded upon this capability.
- Sony gave these dogs static-based touch sensors instead of buttons to provide a more organic petting experience.
- ERS-7s use a single software line called MIND. There are 3 versions – each one is an update and has expanded features.
- They have a much wider “vocal range” than previous models, and can even speak on MIND 3.
- It is the first model capable of self-charging right out of the box.
- You can show the ERS-7 special cards and have the dog perform tricks or execute other commands with them.
ERS-7 Software and Behavior

ERS-7s use the MIND series of software and nothing else. All three of these can be pretty similar in how they interact with their environment, with each upgrade mostly just adding fun new features.
Overall, the ERS-7 aibo feels very organic and alive, and they can compete with the ERS-1000 there to some extent. Some argue that they even feel more life-like than ERS-1000s They:
- explore their environment
- play with their toys autonomously and have improved skill over time
- seek out your attention and may even call your name
- take naps when sleepy (and can even have a favorite spot to nap)
- keep a diary with a daily photo (MIND 2 and 3)
- charge themselves when needed
The MIND software is overall very impressive. ERS-7s have the ability to remember the locations of their favorite items and charging station (although limited to one room), as well as recognize their owner’s face thanks to MIND.
They can even be your alarm and wake you up every morning if you’d like them to, and they will go to bed at a specific time if set.
You can also set them up to be in puppy mode, where you can raise them similar to the ERS-210 Life software, though it is much more simplistic. Still a cute option to have though!
ERS-7 Design
The ERS-7 was the first aibo model Sony referred to as a dog. They have rounded shapes and cute silicone ears. Overall, they most certainly do look dog-like!
Colors
The ERS-7 model comes in three different colors: white, black, and champagne. Sony released each one alongside new MIND software. All colors have a glittery metallic sheen that is quite beautiful.

Here are several extra resources from around the internet that may help you with your ERS-7.

ERS-7 Programming
ERS-7 programming can be quite advanced. OPEN-R is the primary language here, and you can program them to do just about anything you want.
Programming these dogs is challenging due to the limited availability of information. It is generally not something I suggest for anyone who is not an advanced user.
However, it isn’t too difficult to install custom data from websites like this. Here is a video tutorial explaining all the steps:
If you want to program a 7, it is best to join a Discord community and ask experienced members where to start.
